Jeff Bezos brings signature management style to 6 billion AI startup
Jeff Bezos has a unique set of management practices he used and espoused during his time as CEO of Amazon. Amazon founder and former Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos honed his leadership philosophy running one of the world's largest companies. Project Prometheus, which Bezos co-founded with scientist Vik Bajaj, will use AI to accelerate engineering and manufacturing in fields like aerospace and automobiles, the New York Times reported. The startup has $6.2 billion in funding, sourced in part from Bezos himself, and employees counted in the dozens, some of whom were poached from leading AI labs like OpenAI and Google DeepMind. As co-CEO with Bajaj, Bezos is back in a formal executive post for the first time since stepping down from Amazon in 2021.

Data centers in space? Jeff Bezos says it's possible
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos speaks at the main panel of Italian Tech Week 2025 in Turin, Italy, on Friday. TURIN - Amazon founder Jeff Bezos predicted on Friday gigawatt-scale data centers will be built in space within the next 10 to 20 years and that continuously available solar energy meant they would eventually outperform those based on Earth. Speaking at the Italian Tech Week in Turin, Bezos also compared the surge in artificial intelligence to the internet boom of the early 2000s, urging optimism despite the risk of speculative bubbles. The concept of orbital data centers has gained traction among tech giants as those on Earth have driven up demand for electricity and water to cool their servers. In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.

88m pollution-tracking satellite backed by Jeff Bezos missing in space
Google said when it was launched it hoped its project would "fill gaps between existing tools". The company was using its artificial intelligence tools to process the data and generate a global methane map. But after just a year in orbit, in what was meant to be a five-year programme, communication was lost with MethaneSat. The team at EDF suspect that the satellite has lost power and said in a statement "that it is likely not recoverable." It went on to say that some of the software could be re-used but said it was too early to comment on whether a new satellite would be launched.

Explainable identification of similarities between entities for discovery in large text
Joshi, Akhil, Erukude, Sai Teja, Shamir, Lior
With the availability of virtually infinite number text documents in digital format, automatic comparison of textual data is essential for extracting meaningful insights that are difficult to identify manually. Many existing tools, including AI and large language models, struggle to provide precise and explainable insights into textual similarities. In many cases they determine the similarity between documents as reflected by the text, rather than the similarities between the subjects being discussed in these documents. This study addresses these limitations by developing an n-gram analysis framework designed to compare documents automatically and uncover explainable similarities. A scoring formula is applied to assigns each of the n-grams with a weight, where the weight is higher when the n-grams are more frequent in both documents, but is penalized when the n-grams are more frequent in the English language. Visualization tools like word clouds enhance the representation of these patterns, providing clearer insights. The findings demonstrate that this framework effectively uncovers similarities between text documents, offering explainable insights that are often difficult to identify manually. This non-parametric approach provides a deterministic solution for identifying similarities across various fields, including biographies, scientific literature, historical texts, and more. Code for the method is publicly available.

CNN's Jake Tapper warns we're entering era of 'deepfakes and all sorts of misinformation'
CNN's Jake Tapper warned on Monday that the country was about to enter an "era of deepfakes and all sorts of disinformation" under President Trump, while discussing the Big Tech presence at his inauguration. "We're about to enter an era of deepfakes, and all sorts of misinformation and the degree to which those five gentlemen play a role or do not play a role, will be pivotal in terms of where the American people are four years from now, in terms of understanding what is true and what is false," Tapper said before Trump took the oath of office. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Tesla founder Elon Musk, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai were among the tech giants attending the inauguration. Tapper said those five people "control so much of the information that we receive, so much is in their hands when it comes to ascertaining, monitoring, or refusing to monitor what is real, what is not real." CNN's Jake Tapper speaks on CNN on Jan. 12, 2025.

Jeff Bezos to sell 5bn in Amazon shares
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is planning to sell nearly 5bn worth of shares in the technology giant, a regulatory filing showed. The planned sale by the world's second-richest person comes as Amazon's stock surged to an all-time high, putting it in an exclusive club of companies with a 2 trillion valuation. The proposed sale of 25 million shares was disclosed in a notice filed after market hours on Tuesday when the stock price climbed to 200.43. That marks a 30 percent jump from the beginning of the year, far outpacing the 4 percent average gain in the Dow Jones Industrial Average index. Once it goes through, Bezos would own about 912 million Amazon shares, or 8.8 percent of the outstanding stock.

The Most Baffling Part of the Disaster Unfolding at the Washington Post
It has been a very depressing week at the Washington Post. On Sunday night, the newspaper announced that executive editor Sally Buzbee had stepped down after three years atop the masthead. Buzbee's resignation was clearly linked to new CEO and publisher Will Lewis' decision to drastically reorganize the Post newsroom while installing two former colleagues in high-ranking editorial roles at the paper. In a newsroom meeting on Monday, Lewis defended his hires and spared no words in assessing the paper's reported financial dilemma. "We are losing large amounts of money. Your audience is halved," Lewis said.
